Upon graduating from the Royal College of Music, London in 2017, Katie Cowling was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother Rose Bowl, presented by HRH Prince Charles; the first recorder player ever to receive this accolade.
Specialising in recorder, Baroque oboe and the dulcian, Katie studied with Professor Ashley Solomon, Julien Feltrin and María Martínez Ayerza, Gail Hennessy, and Wouter Verschuren. Whilst studying a Master’s, she was proud to be the Fenella and Harry Hope Memorial Scholar supported by an HSH Dr Prince Donatus von Hohenzollern award, as well as being supported by the Worshipful Company of Musicians and a Help Musicians UK Postgraduate Award.
Katie has become a regular on the early music scene performing throughout the UK and Europe, both as a soloist and with various ensembles including The City Musick, Devon Baroque and as a founder of Baroque group, Convivio.
Performance highlights include Marcello’s Concerto in D minor on a tour through the Bolivian jungle, the British semi-staged premier of Rameau’s Les Fetes de Hebe in London and the Opera Bastille, Paris, and a 3-month worldwide tour performing in theatres throughout China, Taiwan, Singapore and Russia, with the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Since co-founding BLOCK4 in 2012, Katie was thrilled to be a member of the first recorder quartet to win the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Competition in its 65-year history, as well as the first recorders to win the Chincoteague Chamber Music Competition in 2016 in the USA.
